Life of Josephine Chaplin

Josephine Chaplin was an American actress and the daughter of Charlie Chaplin, one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema. She died on July 13, 2023, in Paris, at the age of 74.

Josephine was born on March 28, 1949, in Santa Monica, California. She was the third of eight children born to Charlie Chaplin and his fourth wife, Oona O’Neill, who was the daughter of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Eugene O’Neill. She had a close relationship with her father, who cast her in two of his films: Limelight (1952) and A Countess from Hong Kong (1967).

Josephine pursued an acting career of her own, mostly in French films. She had a featured role in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s The Canterbury Tales (1972) as May, the adulterous wife of the elderly Sir January. She also starred in films such as Escape to the Sun (1972), Jack the Ripper (1976), The Bay Boy (1984), and Poulet au vinaigre (1985). She appeared in several TV shows as well, such as L’Homme sans visage (1975) and Hemingway (1988).

Throughout her life, Josephine experienced the joys and challenges of family life. In 1969, she married Nikki Sistovaris, a Greek businessman, with whom she had a son, Charly. They divorced in 1977. She then lived with Maurice Ronet, a French actor, until his death in 1983. They had a son, Julien, born in 1980. In 1989, she married Jean-Claude Gardin, a French archaeologist, with whom she had another son, Arthur. They stayed married until Gardin’s death in 2013.

Josephine was also involved in managing the Chaplin family office in Paris and sponsoring a statue of her father in Waterville, Ireland. She was caught up in a bizarre extortion plot soon after the death of her father in 1978, when two men stole his body and coffin. The family refused to pay a ransom and the remains were recovered 11 weeks later.
